Power up, power down, in the right order

After this you can turn the system on and off in the right order, and say why.

The hook

It's 8:40 on a Sunday. The band is about to run one song before doors. Someone walks to the rack, finds the one big power switch, and flips everything on at once.

POP.

A flat, heavy thud comes out of the mains, loud enough that two people in the back row turn around. The drummer winces. Nothing is obviously broken, so the morning rolls on. But that thud was real, it was avoidable, and on a bad day it's the sound of a speaker getting hurt.

The fix isn't a better switch. It's an order.

The lesson

Your system is a chain. Sound starts at a source (a mic, a music player, the computer), runs through the mixer and any processing, and ends at the part that actually pushes the speakers: the amplifier. On a lot of church systems the amp lives inside the speaker, so "the speakers" and "the amp" are the same box.

Here's the whole rule.

Power UP from the source toward the speakers. The amps or powered speakers go on LAST.

Power DOWN in reverse. The amps or powered speakers go off FIRST. Everything else after.

Say it the short way and it sticks: speakers last on, first off.

Why it matters: when a mixer or a computer powers on or off, it can spit out a quick electrical jolt before it settles. That jolt becomes a thump or a pop. If the amps are already on, that thump goes straight to the speakers at full volume. If the amps are off, the thump has nowhere to go and nobody hears a thing. So you make the amps the last thing awake and the first thing asleep, and you've sealed off the one moment that hurts gear.

A clean Sunday startup looks like this:

  1. Source gear and the computer.
  2. The mixer.
  3. Any processing (system EQ, crossover, anything in the rack between the mixer and the amps).
  4. Wait a few seconds. Let it all settle.
  5. The amps or powered speakers. Last.

Shutdown is the same list, read bottom to top: amps off first, then everything else.

The thump is a transient — a brief, sudden voltage step at the output of a device as it powers on or off. The usual culprit is DC offset: as a circuit's power rails charge up or collapse, the audio output momentarily sits at a voltage other than zero before the coupling capacitors and bias circuits settle. That step gets passed down the chain like any other signal.

Here's why the amp is the dangerous link. An amplifier doesn't know "music" from "a DC step" — it just makes whatever arrives at its input bigger and drives it into the voice coil. A speaker cone moves in proportion to the current through that coil. A near-DC transient shoves the cone hard in one direction and holds it there for a moment instead of letting it swing back and forth the way music does. At low level that's just an audible thud. At high level, on a tweeter or a small driver, that one-directional slam can stress or cook the coil. Power off the amp first and there's no muscle behind the step, so the cone barely twitches.

This is also why bigger installed systems automate the order instead of trusting a volunteer's memory. Sequenced power conditioners switch their outlets in a timed cascade — sources and console first, amps last, and reversed on the way down — with a second or two between steps. Many amplifiers also have an internal muting relay that physically disconnects the output for the first few seconds after power-on, holding the speakers silent until the circuit has settled, then clicking in. The soft "click… and now it's on" you hear from some powered speakers is that relay doing the same job this lesson does by hand: keep the amp's output away from the cone during the messy moment.

One more, same family: phantom power. Condenser mics need +48V sent up the mic cable, and turning that on (or plugging in a live mic while it's on) can fire its own thump down the channel. The voltage itself is harmless to modern dynamic mics — the one real caution case is a vintage ribbon mic, which you're unlikely to meet on a church stage. The everyday concern is the thump. So the same calm habit applies — get phantom power on while the amps are still off, and don't hot-plug mics into a live system. Flip channels on, let things settle, then bring up the amps.

  • Power UP from the source toward the speakers: sources, mixer, processing, then amps.
  • Power DOWN in reverse: amps off first, then everything else.
  • The reason is the turn-on/off thump — a stray jolt that's harmless if the amps are off, and hard on speakers if they're on.
  • Give it a few seconds between the rest of the system and the amps. Let things settle.
