Signal flow as a story (mic to speaker)

After this you can trace one sound from the mouth all the way to the speaker, and point at the spot where it broke.

The hook

The pastor steps up, taps the mic, says "good morning" — and nothing comes out of the room.

Two hundred people are looking at you. Your hand goes to the fader, because that's the part you can see. The fader's fine. Now what?

Here's the thing nobody tells the new volunteer: the sound didn't vanish. It's stuck somewhere along a path. That path is the same every Sunday, and it always runs in the same direction. Learn the path once, and a dead mic stops being a panic. It becomes a short list of places to check, in order.

The lesson

Picture one word — "good morning" — as a single traveler moving across the room. It never teleports. It goes one stop at a time, and every stop hands it to the next one.

The mouth. The pastor speaks. That pushes the air in little waves of pressure, the way a dropped stone pushes rings across a pond. Sound, at this point, is just moving air.

The microphone. The mic has a thin diaphragm inside it, light enough that the air waves shove it back and forth. As it moves, it makes a tiny electric signal that copies the wave exactly. From here on, the pastor's voice is electricity in a wire.

The cable. That signal runs down the mic cable to the stage box or straight into the console. A cable is just the road. Roads can be unplugged, stepped on, or wired to a channel nobody turned up.

The input and the preamp (gain). The signal arrives at a channel input on the board. Out of the mic it's faint — far too small to do anything with. So the first thing the channel does is run it through a preamp, and you set its level with the gain knob (sometimes labeled "trim"). Gain is the front door. It brings the weak mic signal up to a healthy working level before anything else touches it.

The channel. Now that the signal is at a usable level, the channel strip is where you shape it — high-pass, EQ, a little compression. Lesson 0.1 walked the strip top to bottom. For now, just know it's one lane, one source, on its way through.

The mix bus (the main). Every channel you've turned up gets summed together onto the main mix bus — the master output. That's the single blend the room hears: pastor, band, tracks, all added into one stereo signal.

The output and the amplifier. The main bus leaves the console as one signal and feeds the amplifier. The amp is the muscle. It takes that line-level signal and makes it strong enough to physically move the speaker cones. (On powered speakers the amp lives inside the speaker box — same job, different address.)

The speakers. The amp drives the speakers, the cones push the air, and the pressure waves start again — bigger this time.

The room, then the ears. Those waves cross the room, bounce off walls and people, and land in two hundred sets of ears. Same air the pastor moved, copied into electricity and back out, louder.

That's the whole path: mouth → mic → cable → preamp/gain → channel → main bus → amp → speakers → room → ears. Ten stops, one direction, every Sunday.

The three "loudnesses" on the path have names, and they matter.

A microphone puts out mic level — a very small voltage. A dynamic mic gives only a couple of millivolts; a condenser a bit more. Far too small to mix with. The preamp's whole job is to lift mic level up to line level, the standard working level inside the console and most gear (pro line level sits around +4 dBu, roughly a volt — tens to hundreds of times bigger than what the mic hands you, depending on the mic). That's why gain comes first: every stage after it expects a line-level signal, and feeding them a raw mic signal just gives you noise. Set gain too low and you amplify hiss later; too high and you clip. Lesson 2.2 is all about getting it right.

The third level is speaker level — the high-voltage, high-current signal the amplifier sends down the speaker cable to physically move the cones. It can be tens of volts. That's why amp output and mic input use different connectors and never mix: they're worlds apart in size.

And the part worth sitting with: from the diaphragm onward, the signal is a faithful electrical copy of the pressure wave the pastor made. The voltage wiggles in exactly the same shape as the air did. The board doesn't move air — it moves a tiny drawing of the air, until the amp and speaker turn the drawing back into air at the far end.

Remember

  • Sound travels one path, one direction: mouth → mic → cable → preamp/gain → channel → main bus → amp → speakers → room → ears.
  • When something's wrong, walk the chain in order from the source. Don't jump to the part you can see.
  • Gain comes first, the fader comes near the end — they are different stops, not two words for "volume."
  • The signal is an electrical copy of the voice. The mic makes the copy; the amp and speaker turn it back into sound.
  • A dead mic isn't a mystery. It's a short list of stops to check, top to bottom.

Your turn

  • Pick one channel and trace it end to end: find the mic, follow the cable to the input, find its gain knob, its fader, then which output it feeds.
  • Say the path out loud from memory, in order, without looking.
  • Next time a mic is quiet, name the stop you're checking before you touch a knob ("gain," "cable," "mute").
