The hook
It's 8:40 on Sunday. The band is loading in, someone is asking if their mic is on, and you're standing in front of a black slab covered in maybe two hundred knobs. They handed it to you because you're reliable, not because you trained for this.
Here's the part nobody tells you: that wall of controls is the same dozen things, repeated. Learn the dozen and the wall goes quiet. We're going to walk it, slow, with no jargon.
The lesson
Start with the one idea that makes the whole board readable.
A mixer is a stack of identical vertical strips, side by side. Each strip handles one source — one microphone, one keyboard, one laptop feeding music. That strip is that source's own lane, running top to bottom. The signal comes in at the top, travels down through the controls, and leaves at the bottom into the main mix.
So you don't have two hundred controls. You have one lane you actually need to learn, copied across every channel.
Let's go down one lane, top to bottom.
The input, at the very top. This is where the cable plugs in — the mic, the DI box from the keyboard, whatever this lane is carrying. The source enters here and starts its trip down the strip.
Gain (sometimes labeled "trim"), the first knob. A microphone puts out a tiny signal, far too small to be useful yet. Gain is the knob that brings that small signal up to a healthy working level before it goes anywhere else. Set this first, set it once. It's the most important knob on the strip and the one beginners ignore.
The EQ knobs, below the gain. Usually three or four knobs labeled something like HIGH, MID, LOW. These are tone controls, the same idea as the bass and treble on a car stereo, with more precision. Low for the body and weight, high for the air and crispness, mid for everything in between. Leave them flat (straight up) until you know what you're fixing.
The aux sends (or "monitor sends"), a row of knobs in the middle. Here's a thing the board does that surprises people: it can build more than one mix at the same time. The main mix goes out to the room. But the singer on stage needs to hear themselves in their monitor speaker, and they want a different balance — more of their own voice, less of the drums. Each aux knob sets how much of this channel gets sent into one of those separate stage mixes. The same aux knobs also feed effects like reverb. For now, just know: aux means "a separate send, going somewhere other than the main room."
Mute and solo, two small buttons. Mute silences this lane completely. Solo does the opposite — it lets you hear only this lane, usually in your headphones, so you can check one source without the whole band playing. Solo is your "let me just listen to the kick drum by itself" button.
The fader, the long slider near the bottom. This is the one most people already recognize. It sets how loud this lane sits in the main mix — how much of the singer you hear against everything else. This is the control you ride during the service. Mixing, mostly, is moving faders to balance who's loud and who's quiet.
The meter. A little column of lights next to the fader (or grouped with the others). It shows how much signal is actually moving through the channel. Green is fine. If it's slamming into red at the top, the signal is too hot and will distort. Meters are how the board talks back to you. Watch them.
Now down to the bottom of the whole board, past the individual lanes.
The main fader (the "master"). Every channel's signal flows down and combines into one final mix. The main fader controls the loudness of that whole combined mix as it leaves the board. One slider for the entire room.
The mains output. The physical jacks where that final mix leaves the mixer and heads to the amplifier and the speakers the congregation hears. Top of the strip the sound comes in; here is where the finished mix goes out.
The headphone / cue knob. Sets the volume in your headphones. Paired with the solo buttons, this is how you listen in on any single channel privately, without the room hearing you check.
That's the lane: in at the top, gain, EQ, sends, mute/solo, fader, meter. Then everything pools into the main fader and out the mains. Every other channel is the same lane doing the same job for a different source.

The gain knob is really the control for the preamp — a small amplifier on every input. A microphone's output is genuinely tiny, often only a few thousandths of a volt. Line-level gear inside the board wants something tens to over a thousand times stronger, depending on the mic. The preamp's whole job is to bridge that gap and lift the mic up to line level as cleanly as possible.
So why is gain a separate knob from the fader, when both seem to make things louder? Because they sit at opposite ends of the strip and do different jobs. This is called gain structure.
Set gain so the preamp output lands in a healthy range — on a digital board, aim for an average around −18 dBFS with peaks staying below about −10 dBFS, so loud moments don't clip. That gives you the best ratio of signal to background hiss. Get this right once and the whole channel runs clean.
The fader then sets that clean signal's level in the mix, and you move it freely all service without ever touching how clean the signal was. If you tried to fix a too-quiet channel by shoving the fader up, you'd amplify the hiss along with the voice. If you tried to balance the mix by riding the gain, you'd risk clipping the preamp every time you pushed it. Two knobs, two jobs, in that order: gain for a clean signal, fader for the blend.
Remember
- A mixer is one channel strip repeated. Learn one lane and you can read the whole board.
- Signal runs top to bottom: in, gain, EQ, sends, mute/solo, fader, out.
- Gain (top) sets a clean signal. The fader (bottom) sets loudness in the mix. They are not the same knob.
- Aux sends build separate mixes — stage monitors and effects — apart from the main room mix.
- Meters are the board talking back. Green good, red too hot.
Your turn
- Stand at your board and find one full channel strip. Trace it top to bottom and name each control out loud: input, gain, EQ, sends, mute, solo, fader, meter.
- Point to the gain knob and the channel fader and say which one you set once and which one you ride during the service.
- Find the main (master) fader and the headphone/cue knob. Confirm you can tell them apart from the channel faders.
- On a channel with nothing plugged in, press mute, solo, and watch the meter. Get your hands used to where they live.
