The hook
Saturday afternoon, empty room. Tomorrow there's a full band: drums, bass, electric, acoustic, keys, a worship leader and two background singers. Nine channels of people who can all play, waiting on you to turn them into one sound.
You know the pieces now. Gain staging, the strip, faders, buses. But knowing the pieces isn't the same as knowing the order. The order is the difference between a mix that assembles itself in forty-five minutes and a panicked swirl where you fix the same three problems in circles until the doors open.
Every working engineer carries a build order in their head. Here's one that works, start to finish. Steal it whole; adjust it later.
The lesson
One principle before the steps, because it decides half your decisions for you:
In a worship mix, the lead vocal wins. Every fight for space — vocal versus electric guitar, vocal versus cymbals, vocal versus pad — resolves in the vocal's favor. The congregation is there to sing; they can only follow words they can hear. Build everything beneath that.
Phase 1 — Before anyone plays (20 minutes, alone)
Know your inputs. Write the list: channel 1 kick, 2 snare, 3–4 overheads, 5 bass, 6 electric, 7 acoustic, 8 keys, 9 lead vocal, 10–11 BGVs, 12 pastor. Label the board — scribble strips on analog, channel names on digital. Under pressure, reading beats remembering.
Zero the board. Faders down, gains down, EQs flat, every send back to nothing no matter where last week left it. On a digital desk, this is one recall of a clean baseline scene (lesson 3.4). You cannot build in order on top of someone else's leftovers.
Line check. One source at a time: does the kick mic reach channel 1? Scratch each mic, watch each meter. You're not mixing yet. You're confirming each path exists — the 0.2 chain, channel by channel.
Phase 2 — Gain and clean-up (while the band trickles in)
Gain-stage every channel with the 2.2 procedure: real playing level, average −18 dBFS, peaks near −10, then hands off. Insist on real energy. The drummer's soundcheck tap is a lie, and you know it now.
High-pass nearly everything. Roll the low-cut in on every channel except kick and bass. Full treatment next level (4.3); for today, it's one button per channel that removes rumble the mix never needed.
Rough monitors. Get the band a workable stage mix on the pre-fader auxes (3.3) before you polish the house. A band that can hear plays relaxed, and relaxed playing is easier to mix. Their needs are simpler than you think: leader wants her voice, everyone wants a little kick and acoustic for time and pitch.
Phase 3 — The build (the band plays one song, you build in order)
Have them play something everyone knows, full energy, and build the house mix one layer at a time. Faders only. Not EQ, not effects. Balance. The order:
1. Drums. Kick first, to a solid level well below where you think it should end up. Snare against it. Overheads until the cymbals and the rest of the kit feel real. The drums are the floor of the building.
2. Bass. Bring it up until kick and bass lock into one low-end engine. Stop hearing "kick" and "bass"; start hearing rhythm section. That relationship carries every full-band mix. Give it thirty seconds of care.
3. Harmony instruments. Keys, acoustic, electric, one at a time. Bring each up until it's clearly present, then stop. These are the walls, not the roof. The classic error is letting the electric guitar sit where the vocal needs to go; place it a notch lower than feels generous.
4. Lead vocal, on top of everything. Bring her up until the voice sits clearly in front of the band: present, effortless, every word intelligible from the back row. If the voice can't get on top without strain, the answer is almost never "vocal up." It's "what's in the way, down" — the 3.2 lesson, applied at the moment it matters most.
5. Background vocals and the rest. BGVs tucked under the lead: felt as thickness, never competing for the same spotlight. Pads and tracks under everything. Pastor's channel checked and muted until needed.
Now walk the room while they play. Mixes read differently at the back, under the balcony, at the front row. Come back, correct, walk again.

Why vocal-on-top is an acoustics decision, not just a taste. Speech intelligibility lives in a narrow band — roughly 1–4 kHz, where consonants differentiate words — and that's exactly where electric guitars, snare, cymbal wash and keyboard upper registers pile their energy. Masking (Level 1.3, and rigorously in 9.3) is asymmetric and merciless: louder competitors in the same critical bands erase the vocal's consonants first, and consonants are intelligibility. This is why "vocal up" so often fails as a fix: pushing the vocal 3 dB into a crowded 2 kHz region buys less clarity than pulling the electric guitar 3 dB out of it. You're not balancing loudness; you're allocating critical bands. Level 4 (EQ) is the surgical version of this same budget.
Why balance-before-EQ is the professional order. Every EQ decision is contingent on balance: a guitar that sounds dull at equal level with the vocal may sound perfect tucked 4 dB under it, because the ear's sensitivity across frequency changes with level (equal-loudness contours, 1.3). EQ moves made before the static mix exists are decisions made against a reference that's about to change. Faders first converges; EQ first circles. The old line "a great mix is 80% faders" isn't nostalgia. It's an observation about how few problems survive a correct balance.
Level discipline and the room. Pick a target for the room and mix to it, not to adrenaline. Contemporary worship commonly runs somewhere around 88–95 dBA for full-band peaks, but the right number is your room's culture; what matters technically is consistency, because equal-loudness curves mean the mix's internal balance audibly changes with level: a balance built at 95 dB sounds thin and vocal-heavy played at 85, and bass-shy mixes built quietly turn boomy loud. Set the level early in the first song, check it with the same SPL app from 1.2 at the same spot every week, and make the static mix at the level the service will actually run.
The static mix as a control-theory idea. Building a parked balance and riding excursions from it is a stability strategy: it gives every intervention a defined home to return to, which prevents the integrator-windup failure mode of live mixing — fader creep (3.2) — where each correction becomes the new baseline for the next. The pros' version adds scenes per service segment (3.4) and DCAs as the ride handles (3.3): band on one DCA, vocals on another, and the whole service mixed from four faders that always return to the marks. You now know every piece of that architecture; this lesson just assembled it.
Remember
- The lead vocal wins every fight. Build the whole mix so that stays true without strain.
- The order: inputs and labels → zero the board → line check → gain → high-pass → rough monitors → then build.
- The build stacks bottom-up: drums, bass locked to kick, harmony instruments a notch humble, lead vocal on top, BGVs tucked under.
- Balance before EQ, faders before processing. Most problems don't survive a correct balance.
- Build a static mix, ride small excursions from it, return to it. And walk the room — the booth is not the congregation.
Your turn
- Write your actual Sunday input list and label every channel before the band arrives.
- Run the full build order once as a timed drill at rehearsal, faders only.
- During the build, find one instrument you can pull down to put the vocal on top, instead of pushing the vocal up.
- Walk the room twice during one song (back wall, then front rows) and note what changed about your balance in each spot.
